How much Coffee can I make for my money?




Coffee beans are usually measured in grams and purchased for home or business in 250g, 500g or even 1kg bags.


In this article we’ll cover all types of “beans per cup”

The question is; how many cups of coffee can I get from lets say, 1 kilograms of coffee beans?

Coffee Fact.. Green beans weigh much more than roasted coffee beans (that’s another topic altogether!)

Did you know that you lose almost 20% of weight when roasting coffee beans! 

That means from a 10kg roast you’ll be left with only 8kg of roasted beans. 

So, we recommend grams per litre for some methods, or ratios or even industry standards (someone has drunk a lot of coffee to get us these!)

Your thinking what! Well let's break this down into brewing methods (please remember these are recommendations and each person may use more or less)

Espresso

An industry standard dose for a espresso of coffee is 18 grams to create 36 ml of liquid coffee. That’s around 120 coffee beans (depending on many factors of course).

For a 1kg bag of coffee beans you should expect to get around 55 cups of espresso. Based on variable data and on a standard single shot coffee.

French Press (also Aeropress, V60, Chemez)

We like to recommend 60g of coffee per litre (this will make 4/5 on average) so that means 15g per cup giving around 65-70 cups of coffee

That leaves us with an average of 50-75 cups of coffee per kilogram. This figure represents the above factors taken into consideration dependent on your preferences of brew method, measuring method (spoon, scales etc) and ground size (fine may contain more on your spatula)

Here we will explore the basics around different roasts for coffee (find further posts on the process on how coffee is roasted) Light Roast   Light Roasts tend to be very fruity and citrus flavoured coffees, due to the high level of oils still inside the beans lighter roasts can come across quite acidic if not extracted properly.
